We are proud to introduce what we humbly consider to be another benchmark amplifier, designed and perfected in collaboration with John Mayer. John has been touring and recording with Two-Rock amps since early 2005, and it was only natural for us to join forces and build him an amp that would meet his specific needs. Based on our Custom Reverb Signature amp, the John Mayer Signature amp is 100 watt, single channel amp with incredible depth, bandwidth, and soundstage.
We have added elements of the Sterling Signature, Overdrive Signature, and Kimock Signature amps to produce pristine cleans with rich harmonics, as well as a sophisticated all tube spring reverb circuit, tuned to John’s ear. We’ve moved the gain and master controls to the far right side of the front panel, separate from the tone controls and reverb, to allow quick adjustment on the fly.A contour control has been added, allowing global fine tuning of overall output EQ. And we’ve finished each unit in gun metal gray carbon fiber covering, black cane grill cloth, and silver piping. Each amp is individually signed by John, and is shipped road-ready in a Calzone road case. Only 25 of these amps will be available.

The “Your Body Is A Wonderland” performer noted that he strongly feels that artist reps at instrument companies need to have the freedom and authority to experiment and work with artists, without being restrained, because of being obligated to answer to someone else at the company, stifling creativity, advancement and improvements when it comes to manufacturing instruments.
Mayer addressed Boak, saying, “You have the keys to the company. It’s really important for the artist reps to have the keys to the company.” He added, “That’s how great instruments are made, and great relationships are made with artists.”
The Martin 00-45SC John Mayer Edition’s top inlay typically circles around the tongue of the fingerboard extending toward the rosette. Its design also has pearl inlay edging along the sides of the fretboard, which extends directly with miter joints into the rosette. The inlay motif of the three-ring Style 45 rosette is perfectly patterned as a matching inlay on the higher surface of the fingerboard, offers the illusion of complete continuing circles.
The 1902 alternate “torch” design is featured on its headstock in blue paua.
Mayer explained of his intent in working with Martin to create the new custom signature guitar, “It fulfills the need, and sharing it with collectors.” He elaborated, “I do feel the guys over at Martin who build those guitars are artisans, and I know that it’s a tough world out there right now in terms of the economy, and people not getting their worth for what they do.” He praised of Martin’s attention placed on quality and detail, noting, “Even in the Twenties, there were still people that built very ornate, beautiful things, because that’s what artists do. So this guitar represents that dedication at all times to furthering artistry.”
“I am absolutely stunned by my Stagecoach guitar every time I play it,” said John Mayer. “It has the charisma that very few guitars have. I connect with it sonically and feel wise… but that third thing is very rare. It honest to God stimulates my imagination on some other level. I know it sounds like hyperbole, but it’s quite an accomplishment.”
The 00-42SC John Mayer Custom Signature Edition maintains many elements reminiscent of the original 00-45SC, including the unique eye-catching style 45 rosette inlay that continues into the fingerboard extension. Golden Era-style 42 snowflakes and CFM block inlay are all executed in exquisite blue paua pearl. Beautiful and dense cocobolo is retained for the back and sides, creating complex bass, generous mid-range, clear trebles, and uncommon power and sustain.
John Mayer has been busy since he introduced the Martin 00-45SC John Mayer Stagecoach Edition last year. The seven-time Grammy Award-winner put the finishing touches on Born and Raised, his fifth album. Released in May, Born and Raised became Mayer’s third album to reach No. 1 on the Billboard “Top 200” list, a position it held for two weeks. The album also garnered rave reviews and produced two singles: “Shadow Days” and “Queen of California.” Plans for a North American concert tour were derailed by a recurrence of vocal problems that silenced Mayer early in the decade, but while receiving treatment and resting his voice, he played guitar for vocalist Frank Ocean on “Saturday Night Live,” at the “Love for Levon” concert honoring the late Levon Helm and on tracks for legendary pianist Chuck Leavell’s next album.
Each 00-42SC John Mayer Custom Signature Edition is delivered in a Geib-style hard shell case. A left-handed version of this guitar may be ordered at no additional charge and factory-installed electronics are an extra-cost option. Authorized C.F. Martin dealers are now accepting orders for the open-ended 00-42SC John Mayer Custom Signature Edition and participating dealers will be listed on the Martin website: www.martinguitar.com.

Just had a J.M. Signature strat for a while to try it out. Sure has some great things going for it, but as it was, not quite what I’m after tonally. Didn’t seem to have a traditional strat tone to it somehow… also, to me, there was no “magic” in the sound coming out of it… no chime in the frequencies of interest to my ears, I guess. Sounded just straight forward, nothing special. There is some magic to certain guitars and single coils… like I hear from Robben Ford’s favorite tele.
The body resonated well, great sustain, and sounded good unplugged, far as my limited knowledge goes.
Since the guitar was on approval from a store, I didn’t want to change the pickups out and see if that would do it for me. Has anyone changed out the pickups on one of these… and what were the results ?
